Demelza Tregorran is desperate to keep her brothers and sister in their ancestral home and to keep the roof above their heads. On the beach early one morning, she inadvertently pushes an autocratic stranger into the sea. She is not impressed by his manners but can't help but admire his appearance.
Dr. Lucas Fairfield is immediately attracted to Demelza and decides to use some of his unwanted inheritance to help her out of her financial difficulties. Demelza agrees to take Lucas in as a paying guest .With her friend Martha as chaperone, who can possibly object to the arrangement?
Lucas is a respectable gentleman and wealthy enough to pay her far more than necessary for his board. Demelza is a simple Cornish maid. What possible interest could such a sophisticated man have in her?
Q: Thank you for allowing me to visit this morning. Why do you think Fenella J Miller chose you to represent her?
A: I am, I must suppose, A Cornish Maid. Although I believe I am a little old to be considered a maid. That aside, I am a hardworking and spirited young lady and I am sure Mrs Miller must be impressed by my endeavors.
Q: Tell us a little about yourself?
A: As I mentioned I am Cornish. My parents are both deceased and I live in Tregorran House, Tregorran with my siblings. Serena is ten years of age and the boys, Jack and Tom nearly six.
Q: What is your birth date?
A: Let me see . I shall be two and twenty on my next name day. This is 1814 so I was born in 1793.
Q: What do you wish people would know about you?
A: I am a loving sister and determined to keep my family together. The house is in sad state of repair, much of the estate unproductive and without divine intervention I fear we shall not be able to remain here another winter.
Q: Will we be seeing more of you or are you stepping out of the lime light?
A: I do not think Mrs Miller intends to visit Cornwall again.
Q: What is your perfect evening?
A: To sit on the terrace and look at the sun setting over the cliffs knowing my family is safe and well upstairs and I have completed my tasks for the day.
Q: Do you feel you were portrayed fairly?
A: Indeed I do: I had no idea I was so pretty. I do not spend time admiring myself in the glass for I am far too busy.
Q: Tell us about Dr Lucas Fairfield and what drew you to him.
A: The moment I set eyes on him on the beach I was attracted. He is blond, not common in this part of the country and far taller than other gentlemen. His eyes are an unusual shade of dark blue and his smile makes my toes curl in my slippers. However I must own he can be a trifle dictatorial for my taste. I think that comes form him being an army doctor for some years.
Q: What do you do to relax?
A: Good heavens! I'm far too busy to sit down. If I did have the time I would love to read a romance novel.
Q: What do I dislike?
A: Well for one the holes in the roof. Also having too little money to give the children what they need.
Q: What would I like to own?
A: I should love to have a riding horse again. But I would settle for a puppy for the children.
Pray excuse me, I can hear the children waking. I must go in and prepare their breakfast. I thank you for your interest. I bid you and your readers good morning.
